Safety Standards for the Secure Use of Autonomous Vehicles in Daily Life - Development and Inspection of Guidelines

Project leader:Takeyoshi Imai
Year:2025 Project number:2520A

Background and Objectives

The safety requirements that autonomous vehicles (AVs) operating at Level 4 must meet, as well as the allocation of responsibility in the event of an accident, remain unclear. In order to clarify these aspects, the 2402C Project has developed "Guidelines".
Based on these guidelines, feedback will be gathered from AV users, manufacturers, operators, and government authorities in order to refine the "Guidelines". These will be published in both Japanese and English.

Expected Results

This initiative is intended to promote public acceptance of AVs and contribute to the enhancement of users' quality of life, through the establishment of guidelines and the collection of feedback from relevant stakeholders. The guidelines are intended to provide clear direction to engineers of automated driving systems and manufacturers of AVs regarding the mitigation of risk in the event of an accident involving an AV, with the objective of enhancing the overall safety quality of AVs. Furthermore, adherence to the stipulated guidelines by relevant stakeholders is expected to enhance the quality of AVs, thereby reinforcing consumer confidence in their reliability.
