Project leader:Fumihiko Nakamura
Year:2020 Project number:2004C

Background and Objectives

In considering the future of cities, we believe that cities should be sustainable and creative. Needless to mention the cases of New York, London and Vienna, the accumulation of cultural and creative functions and activities is of significant importance. The purpose of this research is to clarify the role of public transportation as a receiver of derived traffic demand and a mechanism to attract and guide them. So far, we have conducted case studies in New York, London, and Vienna, invited experts, sorted out issues in Tokyo and regional cities, and conducted a web survey to analyze behavioral awareness. Based on the results, in the final fiscal year, we will carry out case studies in Tokyo as a metropolitan city, Toyama as a regional city, and Bangkok as a model for developing countries, and present proposals on how public transportation ought to be. Expected Results

From activities conducted over the past two years, we sorted out issues, etc. of cities we obtained through cross-sectional analyses of the leisure activities and traffic behavior of people in large cities and regional cities in Japan and New York, surveys on the excellent cultural and creative functions and case examples of cooperation between public transportation systems in New York, London, and Vienna, and hearings (interviews) and surveys on the actual conditions in Tokyo and Toyama. Based on these, we will present proposals on issues related to spaces that are connected to public transportation, issues related to public transportation infrastructure including traffic nodes and vehicles, and issues related to systems that support public transport, while paying attention to the historical context of cities and the diversity in the types of cultural experiences that take into consideration trends in MaaS, including continuity and scale, options and degree of freedom in movement, information provision, and fare systems. Concrete proposals on the future of public transportation that go beyond congestion and traffic jam countermeasures and have a significant impact on cultural and creative functions, will give foresight to discussions on problem-solving transportation systems, while proposals based on potential and take feasibility thoroughly into account also excel in practicality and will become useful outcomes for future public transport policies in cities.
