Recommendations on How Public Transportation Should Support the Cultural and Creative Functions of Cities
Background and Objectives
In thinking about the future of cities, cities are supposed to be sustainable and creative. New York, London, and Vienna are just a few examples of cities where the accumulation of cultural and innovative functions and activities is of great importance. The independent research project 2004 aimed to clarify the role of public transportation as a mechanism to attract and guide the transportation demand derived from various cultural and creative activities. The results of the research activities were obtained through overseas case studies, domestic and overseas web surveys, and domestic case studies. This time, to appeal the consequences to society, we will publish a book and plan and implement an international symposium.
Expected Results
For the book that we are considering publishing, we envision a structure that includes an introduction to the results of our research activities over the past three years and a newly written chapter by a volunteer member of the research group based on the fruitful discussions at each research meeting. The results of the research activities, paying attention to the historical context of the city and the diversity of the types of cultural experiences, will be discussed in terms of the issues of space leading to public transportation, the issues of public transportation infrastructure, including transportation nodes and vehicles, and the issues of systems supporting public transportation, including continuity and scale, mobility options and freedom, information provision, and fare systems. Recommendations based on MaaS trends will also be included in the book. The symposium will be almost the same as the book and will be held online, inviting experts on urban transportation from Europe, targeting the audience expected to purchase the book, including experts on cities and transportation, interested citizens, and students. Through the publication and the symposium, the results of research based on the international and super interdisciplinary nature of the International Association of Traffic and Safety Sciences will be widely shared with interested parties, including knowledge from overseas experts, which is expected to promote activities for the reform of Japanese cities and the realization of a safe and comfortable mobility society post-COVID-19
