Development of Database on Roundabouts and Collection of Case Examples in Japan
Background and Objectives
Since the start of practical deployment of roundabouts under the IATSS research and investigation project in FY2009, the amended Road Traffic Act was enacted in 2014, and roundabouts have been increasing throughout Japan. Although some of these roundabouts have various features in terms of their structure, application, traffic conditions, etc., their actual conditions have not necessarily been sufficiently known. Therefore, in this project, we will aim at systematically organizing state of the art of roundabouts in Japan by compiling a collection of actual case examples as well as developing a highly reliable database on roundabouts, while closely with the Roundabout Promotion Council and administrative practitioners.
Expected Results
The development of the roundabout database and collection of case examples will enable the assessment of the actual situation of roundabouts in Japan, as well as an archive related to the history of planning and development and technical considerations that will provide valuable information concerning the administrative and practical aspects of the development of roundabouts in the future. Comparing these with overseas roundabouts will clarify the characteristics of Japan's roundabouts and enable international comparative assessments.
