Study for Accelerating the Spread of Japanese Roundabouts
Background and Objectives
Since the IATSS launched a project on roundabouts (RABs) in 2009, it has been conducting continuous research activities, which have led to steady results at each stage, from introduction studies, social experiments, social implementation, and full-scale deployment following the revision of the law. At present, more than 140 RABs have been installed throughout Japan, but the level of diffusion of RABs among developed countries has only just begun. Tragic traffic crashes at level intersections continue to occur, and the introduction of automated vehicles is expected. This research project aims to contribute to the promotion of RABs in Japan by examining specifications and methods unique to Japan, clarifying differences with those of other countries, and proactively disseminating the results.
Expected Results
-Foresight: To study Japanese-style RABs in anticipation of future traffic signal removalneeds and the automatic operation of intersections.
-Practicality: Specifications and implementation methods for cost-saving Japanese-style RABswill be clarified, and social implementation will be accelerated.
-Uniqueness: By presenting Japan's unique RAB specifications, the differences with those ofother countries can be clarified.
