Development of Roundabout Database and Case Studies in Japan
Background and Objectives
Since the IATSS research project on the practical deployment of roundabouts started in FY 2009, and the revised Road Traffic Act came into effect in 2014, the number of roundabouts has been increasing all over Japan. Although some of these roundabouts have emerged with various characteristics in terms of structure, use, traffic conditions, etc., the actual conditions of these roundabouts are not always sufficiently clear. This project aims to develop a reliable roundabout database in close cooperation with the Roundabout Promotion Council and administrative practices and systematically organize roundabouts in Japan by compiling a collection of case studies
Expected Results
The development of a roundabout database and a collection of case studies will make it possible to evaluate the actual status of roundabouts in Japan and provide valuable administrative and practical information for the future development of roundabouts as an archive of the history of planning and development and technical studies. Also, by comparing these roundabouts with those in other countries, the characteristics of Japanese roundabouts can be clarified, and an international comparative evaluation can be made.
